Polka Dot Nails

I don't play about with nail art too often as just painting my nails is something I have only recently managed to do without having polish all over my fingers. I say nail art, but I feel that's pushing it a little when you see all the amazing designs out there in the blogosphere. This morning, while waiting for a friend and having an issue with sitting still for more than 5 minutes this spotty creation was made. My nails were already blue -I  painted them yesterday, and sitting beside me on the dressing table was a darker blue and a pin...what else could I do?!

The colour I used for the base is BarryM Gelly Hi-Shine polish in Blueberry and for the polka dots I used Nails Inc Baker Street. I love how they look together, even if this was created out of impatience.

Repurchased Products: Maybelline the Falsies

If there is one product my face feels naked without, its mascara! Even on no-make-up, make-up days when you don't want too many products on your face I will always have mascara, my eyes just don't seem as open without it. It really does a lot to help you look more awake -even if your not, and really brightens up your face, especially your eyes.

Maybelline the Falsies has been a favourite of mine since it was released maybe 2/3 years ago now, since first trying it out I have continued to buy tube after tube and still love it as much now as it did at the beginning. I stick to quite natural make-up most of the time but when it comes to my eyelashes I want big bold and always black, and that is what you get with the Falsies.

The wand itself is a brush instead of a plastic mascara applicator, I tend to favour these types of brushes over the hard plastic ones as I feel they can most of the time give you a better finish, less clumpy. I have quite large eyes so for me, the wand is a good size but my mum has smaller more narrow eyes and she cannot stand it. She can't apply it without getting it on the skin all around her eyes. It is a curved brush, a "spoon brush" as it says on the packaging, this really helps fan out your lashes from corner to corner and helps add curls at the same time. The consistency is a little more watery that I would like on first use, I always find the runnier mascaras harder to apply neatly, but this does thicken up a little after the first couple of uses.

I try to pick up waterproof versions of any mascara I buy for a couple of reasons 1. I live in Scotland and even if it is sunny, it can rain! 2. I find that they last longer on me throughout the day and hold a better curl. 3. Also when a water proof mascara is coming to the end of it's life, I find that they flake less. Saying that, the ones I have here are not waterproof, I have still never been able to find the "Black Drama" version in a water proof formula...I'm starting to wonder whether one actually exists. Even without being waterproof this mascara does last well and I don't get any smudging or chipping during the course of the day.

The finish it gives you is big black almost false looking lashes, I have relatively long lashes, nothing I can complain about but this does add considerable length to them due to the tiny fibres in the formula. I absolutely love this mascara and will probably continue to buy it for a long time. You can pick this up at any drugstore/highstreet shop, even quite a few supermarkets. Have you tried the Falsies? What are your favourite mascaras?

Summer Make-up Favourites

Simple more natural looking make-up is what I tend to do most of the time, except maybe for a night out or special occasion. It's just easy everyday make-up that works well and is easy to apply, but in summer, that sometimes gets even easier!

Because skin seems to respond well to the sun -or mine does anyway, I can get away with using something more like a tinted moisturiser or maybe just some concealer where needed. The combination I am loving so far this summer is Dr Jart+ BB Cream with Rimmel "Wake Me Up" concealer. The BB Cream is a light creamy consistency and blends into the skin well with very little effort. My skin is on the dry side and it leaves me with a lovely glow and so far I have had no problems with dry patches throughout the day. The best thing about this product is that it has an SPF of 40, so no need for extra suncream on your face -always a bonus! The concealer has been a favourite of mine for a long time now, and I have to say I use it pretty much all year round but I just love it in Summer. As the name "Wake Me Up" suggests it is very brightening for under your eyes and it also blends out well with good coverage, and because this too is light and creamy it doesn't feel cakey over the BB cream. To set my make-up and keep things in place for the day I have been loving the Healthy Balance Unifying Power from Bourjois. It is a very soft fine powder and claims to have a matte finish for 10 hours...but I don't believe that's true, I would say after maybe half of that time I will want to touch up a little. It is actually more of a foundation than a translucent settling powder but for times when I am wearing a much lighter base like a BB cream I appreciate the extra coverage, even though it is only a little.

For lips I have two product that I have been using pretty much exclusively, apart from lip balm. The first is a Maybelline Color Whisper in Coral Ambition, it is honestly just the most pretty coral colour I have ever used and I really hope they release them in the UK before mine runs out! The shade isn't too orange or too bright, it has a pinkish hue to it and suits my pale skin incredibly well. The second is another orangey/coraly shade, Revlon Super Lustrous lip gloss in Kiss Me Coral. This is a lot brighter and I put it on fairly sheer, or sometimes over the Color Whisper. Both have great consistency and are easy to apply, which is what I look for in summer really.

Most days I don't spend too much time on my eye make-up, I will tend to take one shadow and sweep it all over my lid...usually something light and bright such as Virgin or Sin from my Naked palette. I think it is a really pretty summery look, and with a touch of eye liner and some mascara I am good to go. This year I have also been loving grungy kind of messy eye make-up, its another really easy minimal effort look because well...its supposed to look a little messy! For this look I have been using Maybelline Colour Tattoo in 40-Permanent Taupe, I just smudge this all round my eye and then blend it out a little. I think it looks amazing with big salt sprayed hair and pretty summer maxi dresses, I just love the contrast. The great thing about the Color Tattoos is that they stay in place all day and don't budge, which is great in the summer heat.

This week

{Lavender in the evening, the smell is beautiful}

This week another I added another American cup to my small, but growing collection. Still none of them have actually come from America but give me time...I will get there! I have know idea what made me buy it as it's not the most practical thing to carry around but if I take it into Starbucks and have a drink made in my cup instead of a disposable one, I get a discount...so really it will pay for it's self (that's how I am justifying it anyway). But I have to say, there is a certain novelty that comes with drinking from a "special" cup.

I am starting to get back some kind of motivation when it comes to exercising and eating well, which is definitely a step in the right direction! I made jam at the beginning of them week to use up some old strawberries and we had that with scones and tea, but apart from that I have been very good! Let's hope it continues that way. The weather is been just as lovely this week as it have been recently so we have been doing a lot of walking, this has made me realise I should invest in a new pair of trainers...moccasins are not made for long walks, believe me! How was your week?

{My very first attempt at jam, it went well!}

{I love this little note, very sweet}

Leftover Strawberry Jam

When summer gets here and there is an abundance of amazing fresh berries around its hard not to get carried away and buy more than you actually need, but that sometimes does happen and there is a box that passes its super fresh and tasty days that you don't really want to eat. I hate waste, so I had to find a way to use up our forgotten box of strawberries and jam seemed like the best way. I found this very easy recipe online and it turned out really well.

It may not be made the same way as proper jam but it doesn't take more than 25 minutes to prepare and cook and then all that is left to do is cool and store. The recipe is super simple there are only two ingredients -sugar and strawberries, but I'm sure you could do this with your favourite berry if strawberry isn't your thing. The recipe calls for you to leave it boiling for 8 minutes and this will give you a soft set jam, I prefer a slightly firmer set so I let it boil for 12 minutes, but be careful not to let it burn. I am so impressed with the results from such a simple recipe and I will definitely be using it again, maybe even try some variations for Christmas presents this year.

Tea and scones anyone...?

Lacking Motivation

At the start of the year one of the resolutions I made was to lose a little more weight and overall be healthier. Since then this year has had some ups and serious downs and I have lost all track of what I was supposed to be doing in regards to exercise. Over the past week or two I have tried really hard to get back into the swing of things but -annoyingly, its just not happening! I can't seem to find any motivation, in the fight between curling up on the couch or working out for an an hour or two...the couch always seems to win.

We don't have any vacation plans just now but even the thought of bikini's on the beach isn't doing it for me, and if there is a good reason that is it! What do you do when you are feeling very unmotivated? Any tips on how to get back into exercise?

This Week

{Beautiful St. Andrews beach}

This week started quite rightly with a trip to the beach -picnic included! The weather has been so beautiful it seemed wrong not to. We spent the entire afternoon there eating mainly salad and cheese, we even had some scones with cream and jam...not sure if that is considered beach food but it worked for us. On the way home we stopped at an ice-cream shop that I used to go to all the time when I was younger but haven't been to in years. The ice-cream is just amazing and they had a new flavour, raspberry! Which of course I had to try and yes, it was amazing! I noticed while washing up earlier that I now have two of what I am calling my "American mugs". Not because they are from the US because it is still somewhere I haven't visited, but because they are from American chain stores. One day I will get some mugs from actual American shops...then the really will be my American mugs. Hope you have all had a lovely week.

Bobbi Brown Corrector & Concealer

I have searched for such a long time now for a product that will cover the dark circles under my eyes. The one I really wanted to try was Bobbi Brown Corrector and Concealer but because of the cost I always decided against it, instead opting for cheaper alternatives that really didn't do what I wanted them to. With hindsight being 20:20 it would probably have been cheaper for me to just buy the Bobbi Brown product I wanted in the first place. Luckily my very sweet fiance bought them for my birthday a couple of weeks ago, I knew I was getting them since I obviously had to go and get colour matched but I wasn't any less excited about them.

I have the Corrector in Extra Light Bisque -which may be one of the newer shades they have added but I'm not sure, and the Creamy Concealer Kit in Porcelain, the colour names of these products do remind me just how pale I actually am.

After applying my foundation I use my fingers to apply the Corrector to the dark areas under my eye, and then blend it in the my Real Techniques Deluxe Crease Brush. I then do the same thing with the Concealer, dabbing on top of the Corrector and blending it in. I find that it blends in much better with the brush but I prefer firstly applying it with my fingers so I don't end up with too much product on my face, also I think the heat from your finger tips makes it apply a little better. I will sometimes finish with the powder in the kit if I am not powdering the rest of my face, if I am I will just use that.

I am so glad I finally have this product, I have heard so many good things and I have to say I agree. It seems to last well all day, and I haven't noticed any problems with creasing but I tend not to take it too far out under my eye. The colour I was given is a great match and the salmon pink colour of the corrector covers the dark eye circles so well. The lovely make-up artist I was speaking to also told me that the colours match up with foundations so I would know what one to buy if I ever wanted to, very helpful! The consistency is very creamy and easy to apply, it also blends very nicely. This is definitely a product I will be repurchasing and it has also intrigued me to try more from Bobbi Brown...any suggestions?

Today

via weheartit

Today has been one of those days full of procrastination, I have tried to be productive but to be honest it hasn't happened...at all!

It is raining outside and has been all day on and off, because I haven't really had to go anywhere I have spent the day in the house doing as follows.

Most of the day I have been listening to Gabrielle Aplin, who's voice I may actually be in love with. I completely fell for Gabrielle and her music when I first heard this song from last years John Lewis tv advert, the one with the snowmen - it is one of my all time favourite things. Who would have thought two little snowmen could bring a tear to your eye. Quite a large portion of the day has been dedicated to window shopping online, not buying anything but spending countless amounts of money in my head. If only I could win the Lottery?

Each time I have walked into the kitchen I have been sneaking little bits of Nutella. I for some reason kid myself that if I leave it in there then I won't eat it, when in actual fact I just find more reasons to go to the kitchen...it would be far more efficient if I just brought the jar with me! Also...I'm not really sure who I am 'sneaking' it from as I am the only one in the house. Spare time these days seems to filled a lot with YouTube videos and today has been no different. I came across this video a while ago but the first one I found has been deleted - not sure why, but I found someone else who had posted it. I have watched it so many times and I just love the message behind it, also how it has been put together with the music.

How have you spent your day today?

Oh...I have just remembered that I have washed and dried two loads of laundry. That's productive isn't is?

I love rainy days...

Birthday Beauty Treats

Last week, as some of you will know was my birthday! The whole week was wonderful and full of so many great things also, some very sweet gifts from friends and family. I was given quite a few beauty bits this year  - which I am very excited about! - so thought I would share them with you.

I have become a true convert to the whole hair oil craze this year so I was super excited to find this in a bag of goodies from my best friend, it was on my list of things to try when the sample I am currently using runs out. From super excited to incredibly confused! She also bought my hair dye, when I opened this I immediately thought she had gone mad because I have brown hair and this is brown hair dye but it is actually a very thoughtful gift. I know almost nothing about hair but apparently this stuff will help put the colour back in your hair that has been taken away by the sun, and the past two years my hair has become much lighter. Excited to see if that works, has anyone else tried toner for their hair?

These two beautiful things are not just absolutely gorgeous to look at, they are also my first ever NARS products. I have used the blush/highlight a couple of times now and it looks so pretty - even on my pale skin! -  but haven't tried out the palette. Does any one have any tips for colours or ways to wear them?

I actually knew I was getting the Bobbi Brown things, but that didn't make me any less excited to use them. The corrector and concealer are nothing short of amazing at covering my dark under eye circles! I'm not sure why I never bought them but I am so glad Paul did. The Maybelline Color Tattoo's were little extra things that Paul likes to put in with my gifts, he is so sweet that way, and they are really lovely shades to quickly apply when you want a little colour.

I'm sure all off of these things will end up in future monthly favourite posts!
