Made Me Happy This Week

made me happy this week

It's Friday, and you know what that means...tomorrows Halloween!! Our big plans have sadly changed so there will be no parties or going to town with costumes but that's ok -these things can't be helped sometimes. However...I still won't let it pass without a little fuss so it will be a night of Halloween goodies and Halloween films, and when I say films, I mean more along the lines of Hocus Pocus -I don't do scary! I think I may also attempt a pumpkin pie, my first ever -so I'll let you know how that turns out.

1. Thursday morning I woke up as the sun was rising, my alarm hadn't gone off, I just woke up. Normally, I'd feel a little annoyed by this and immediately want to go back to sleep but, the sky looked incredible! It was 100 different shades of pink and orange and I found myself just sharing at it for a while before nodding off again. If that happens again I will definitely take a picture.

2. Our little ball of fluff has had a hair cut so she no longer looks like a teddy, but on the other hand she once again smells all lovely and clean.

3. Tonight we will be carving our pumpkins, and I cant wait! I haven't quite decided on how my finished design will be, but I'm sure pictures will end up either here or Instagram.

4. Our living room at the moment is making me very happy, we have a few decorations up -some for Autumn and some for Halloween.

5. This week I painted my nails and it's the best job I've ever done! I have to say I'm feeling very proud of myself, it looks good, it isn't over the rest of my fingers and most impressively -I've managed to sit still long enough for it to dry and haven't smudged it! *proud face

6. Marks and Spencer's cookies, I feel I shouldn't admit this but we've eaten two packets this week -they're so good!

7. Nutella porridge for breakfast this morning -if you haven't tried it I suggest you give it a go!

8. The clocks going back last weekend, we made sure to make the most of that extra hours sleep!

New York is Always a Good Idea!

new york is always a good idea
{blog in the picture is this one here}

I have possibly the most exciting news I've had in a long time, and as you might have guessed by the title it's to do with New York.

We're going!!

Paul and I have booked a trip to New York and it's taking all the strength I have in the world to stay calm and not squeal and shout about it all day long to everyone I see. I can't even begin to tell you how long I've wanted to go, but due to many other things in life it's never really been practical so it's been put off, and put off, until it simply became a dream that I thought it was never going to happen, but now it is and I can't quite believe it! There are no emoji's or text that allow me to explain to you just how happy I am right now, and as I write this I have a huge smile on my face!

As I've wanted to visit for so long now, I've put together quite a list of places I'd like to go, things I'd like to do and of course all the places I want to eat! Not to mention the shopping I'd like to do while we're there. While I obviously can't recommend these places seeing as we've never been I thought I'd share a few that I'm looking forward to trying.

Places to eat...

Dough - I have seen so many Instagrams, so many Twitter pictures and so many people online raving about this doughnut shop so I think its only right that we give it a go while we're there.

Magnolia Bakery - This is a must really, I don't think you can visit NYC and not try a cupcake.

Croque Monsieur - Considering how much Paul and I love a croque monsieur sandwich, and that I've been told this place serves some of the best, we should really give it a try.

The Meatball Shop - This is another place we've been recommended and I just love the idea of it -I hope we get to try it. Also I've been told the ice-cream sandwiches and incredible!

Things to see...

The Empire State Building - I can't wait to see this beautiful building and the view from the top I'm sure will be breathtaking.

The MET - I love going to museums and art galleries and I;m sure I'll love this one too.

The 9/11 Memorial - I'm sure this will be an incredibly emotional place to visit, but I think it will at the same time be lovely to see how they have remembered all of those people who lost their lives that day.

Times Square - I know some people say to stay away because it's far too "touristy", but I don't think I could visit and not experience Times Square.

Places to Shop...

Sephora - I've never been to a Sephora store, I know that we can now have it delivered to the UK but I've always wanted to wait until I was actually there to buy anything.

Bloomingdales - Just because.

Macy's - It's a good thing Paul likes to shop as much as I do because it might take a while to make our way around this store, am I right in thinking it's the worlds largest department store?

Of course there are are more places, shops and sights. I have a ridiculously long list on my phone that I add to almost daily -and it does include things like Chelsea Market and Central Park, but if I'd listed each one this post would never end! We don't go until April, but the way time flies by these days that will no doubt be here before we've even realised. I honestly can't explain to you my excitement -if you have any NYC recommendations for our first visit please let me know. While we are only there for 7 days I want to fit in as much as in humanly possibly -we can rest when we get home.

Made Me Happy This Week

Oh it's getting cold...I love it! This week I've been all about the scarfs and hats to keep cosy and warm, the two I've been reaching for the most are the two in the picture above. The scarf is one of my favourites, it's so soft and it looks lovely with the hat, however, the crazy wind we've had the past couple of days has made it kind of impossible to wear -I would have most definitely lost it! I'm also finding myself a little over excited about everything at the moment and have been caught walking around with a smile on my face. There's just so much to look forward to at this time of year and I can't wait! The cold weather, Halloween, Bonfires Night, Christmas -SO exciting!

1. Adele's new song has made my Friday, it's so beautiful. I've had it on quite a few times today so far, I absolutely love it! In case you missed it you can have a listen here.

2. The new Assassins Creed game was released today and Paul had ordered it to be delivered on the day of it's release, he thinks it hasn't arrived...but it has (hehe). I can't wait to see his face when he gets home.

3. It fills my heart with so much joy to come in the door and have a sock, or some other random object brought to me by our little fluff ball. I know I've mentioned it before but it's just so bloody cute. It's the best way to be welcomed home.

4. The way my mum stops in her tracks -wherever we are, each time her, my gran and I are in the same place and says "look, three generations here"...it makes me laugh.

5. Being in the house in the evening when it's dark outside and having the light's on. I'm not sure why but it has always made me so happy, yet another reason why I love this time of year.

6. All the party food beginning to trickle into supermarkets. You know its the festive party season when that happens -some of it looks pretty tasty too!

7. Lying in bed at night listening to the wind. I know when it's too strong it can be dangerous and cause people a lot of trouble but it's one of those things that makes me appreciate being all wrapped up indoors.

8. Planning our pumpkin designs for this year. I also read a tip online that you should cut the bottom of your pumpkin off instead of making a hole in the top. It lasts longer, and that horrible thing where the lid falls onto your candle doesn't happen. Think I might give it a go!

The Pumpkin Patch

{hat from River Island, similar here, jumper dress from Asos}

Last Friday was one of those perfect October days, it was bright and sunny with clear blue skies but still warm enough to spend the whole afternoon outside without the need for scarfs and jackets. When we woke up to such beautiful weather we knew we had to make the most of it and what better way to spend an October afternoon than pumpkin picking -especially with Halloween just around the corner.

We had quite a lazy start to the day, having tea in bed with the sunshine streaming through the window. I don't know about you, but I think the light is just perfect at this time of year. It sit's so low that it gives everything it touches a beautiful warm glow. Anyway, we finished our tea, got dressed, ready and headed out the door to find pumpkins.

We turned up at Craigies Farm (mentioned before here) just after lunch time and as it was too late for lunch and too early for dinner it seemed only right to have cake, so that's what we did -with a coffee of course. Being the sweet toothed monsters that we are we couldn't settle for a single custard cream biscuit each (which were excellent!), we also had to share a slice of chocolate cake. I blame Paul entirely for this. When we'd finished and were fully fueled on caffeine and sugar we wondered down to find our pumpkins in the pile of straw -which is a lot of fun to walk on, it's kind of bouncy. We took some pictures as we went, trying to find the most perfect of pumpkins for carving. I would however like to go back and pick up some of the green and white ones for decoration, I love their quirky shapes.

I'm sure our finished carved masterpieces will make a showing up here, but for now I will leave you with some pumpkin filled snaps.

Be warned - if your sick of the sight of pumpkins you may want to click off now!

Made Me Happy This Week

Today we had what you could describe as the perfect October day. We woke up to the most beautiful autumn weather, made some hot cups of tea, got dressed in knitwear and hats and headed out to pick some pumpkins -we snapped some pictures along the way so I'm sure they'll find there way up here soon. This weekend we have a games night planned with friends, I haven't played board games in such a long time and can't remember how to play most of them but the night will no doubt be a lot of fun -and I'm sure the pizza, brownies and Oreo truffles will help things along nicely. What are you up to this weekend?

1. Finding the perfect laptop case in TKMaxx. I've been looking for one for a while now with no luck, then I stumble across one I absolutely love...and for only £4.99! You have to love that shop for the bargains!

2. Perfect October weather. October, for me, is the perfect month weather wise and when we get days like we've had this week you can't help but fall in love with it all over again. The sun is low and beautiful, the days are warm but with a slight chill and it's perfect for aimlessly wondering...I like days like that.

3. Did you see my banana bread post this week? Well, I've been eating far too much of that stuff this week -it's just so bloody good!

4. We have made so many Christmas plans this week, the excitement is too much! And our list of presents to get is nearly finished -have to say we're feeling a little smug!

5. Looking at tiny dog coats for our fluffy little girl, she gets so cold in the winter it's nice to wrap her up.

6. Cosy nights with TV and blankets, we've had quite a few of them this week.

7. A little fluffy friend that tries to climb on top of you whenever you sit down, even if you're trying to work with a laptop on your knee's she will try her tiny best to squeeze in.

8. My current moisturiser routine, it's leaving me very happy with my skin at the moment.

Pecan Banana Bread

pecan banana bread
pecan banana bread

Fun fact! ...I hate banana's! Always have, probably always will and it's not just the taste it's the texture too, but banana bread on the other hand is one of my favourite things to eat -I know...odd!

For years I'd never attempted to make any, my gran makes it all the time so I've never had much need to, but I really wanted to give it a go and make one of my own. She very kindly gave me her recipe and after tweaking it a little to make it more to our taste, and after a few not-so successful (fail) outcomes we ended up with what is our absolute favourite and it's so simple to do. To make things a little different I wanted to add some pecans, mainly because I would add pecan nuts to anything given the chance, and I thought the flavours would work well together -and I'm happy to say they do! Something about it also feels very autumnal so what better time than now :)

pecan banana bread

Ingredients:
3 ripe bananas
200g caster sugar
1 egg -beaten
80g of melted salted butter
190g plain flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
100g pecan nuts - chopped

Pre-heat your oven to 180 degrees then grease and line a 9 inch loaf tin.

In a large bowl mash your banana's until you have no large lumps left and then stir in your sugar.

Add your beaten egg and melted butter and mix through, then add in your flour, baking powder, chopped pecans and mix until fully combined.

Pour your mix into your prepared loaf tin and bake for 50 minutes to 1 hour. I find 1 hour to be perfect in our oven, but they're all different so you're best to check, when a knife comes out clean you know you're there.

Let it cool in the tin and then slice up and enjoy. My preferred way to eat it is when it's still warm, topped with butter with a cup of tea.

Super easy and super tasty! I'm now off to enjoy the last lonely slice in the kitchen...shhh!

My Top Sale Picks: Topshop & River Island

River Island

{1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,}

Topshop

{1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,}

Of all the sales there are throughout the year, the one's around this time are my favourite. You can pick up such a huge range of clothing, from bit's for next summer, some on trend pieces for wearing right now and even some great bargains on coats and jackets to see you through winter. While I'm a huge fan of sale shopping, I have to admit I much prefer to do it online. The stores can become so manic and what should be a fun shopping trip turns into this huge stressful situation. You end up coming away with things you'd never normally wear and things that don't fit so I always think online's the way to go! Plus, you can do it in your Pj's with a cup of tea!

I love having a little look through all the online sales but two I always look forward too are Topshop and River Island. Over the last two days they've both started their sales and I wanted to put together some of my favourite bits from each one.  I may have already made a sneaky little order from Topshop, and seeing the 70's theme running through my River Island picks, I'm tempted to order some of them too.

Have you found any sale bargains?

Made Me Happy This Week

made me happy this week

This weeks evenings have been full of tea and fluffy blankets -I've really rather enjoyed it! I'm honestly so pleased that even on sunny days it's starting to get cold, I've been (impatiently) waiting on it for a while now. This weekend's off to a great start too, tonight we're off to see Stomp in Edinburgh, and maybe dinner somewhere -I'm getting hungry just thinking about it! It's not a show I've ever seen, live or on TV and I'm hearing good things so that should be fun. Do you have any plans for this weekend? I'd love to hear about them :)

1. The Bake Off final was amazing, and so emotional that we were all in tears. Well done Nadiya -you were my favourite.

2. Layers and layers of clothes, I like to be cosy.

3. Midweek baking with lots of apples and pecans, some were just recipes testing but a couple will be up here soon!

4. Being out at night and seeing my breath for the first time this season.

5. Buying fairy lights for the garden. Now we've tidied it up a little I thought it would be a shame to not cover the apple trees in twinkly lights for winter, I feel it's a must!

6. Finally getting my (sometimes lazy) butt in gear and starting to exercise again, and feeling all the better for it too. I don't think I'm ever going to be a gym lover but it's all about health at the end of the day and I'm definitely going to keep it up.

7. Getting what has to be one of the funniest emails I've had all year from my friend. It was so unexpected and made me laugh so hard!

Wishlist: A Cosy Night In

a cosy night in

I do love a cosy night in, there aren't many better ways to spend a cold dark evening and I'm hoping for many of them over the next few months as the nights get longer and we want to stay indoors. Obviously getting more and more festive as we get closer to Christmas. It's one thing I kind of miss during summer, I mean, we still have nights in with a good film and a few treats but it's not the same, it's still light outside and well -it's far too warm for fluffy blankets. I've spent far to much time online recently looking at all the little bits that would make a night in, just perfect and I thought they would make a rather lovely wish. With the addition of the brownies from this post and a good film I think this would make for a wonderful night in.

Do you have any favourites that make a night in just perfect?

My Current Autumn Make Up

autumn make up
autumn make up

One thing I always forget about coming up to autumn is how much I love the change of make up. As it starts to get colder I find myself drawn to heavier shimmery shades and while not something I would normally do, I even like pairing heavier eyes with darker lips, you know -now I'm no longer frightened of them.

For the past couple of weeks my favourite look to wear (with or without the dark lip) has been one of my favourite shades from my NARS "And God Created Woman" pallet. I've had this palette for such a long time now and it's one I go back to again and again -it's just so versatile. I'm sure at some point last year this palette was changed and the shadows have been moved around but on mine its the top right hand shade called " Kalahari". It's a such a stunning shade, unlike anything else I have in my collection and one that can give you so many finishes. I can sweep it on lightly for a little shimmer or pack it on top of primer for a stunning full on shimmery look (which I do most of the time), and with "Coconut Grove" (bottom middle) as a kind of smudgy liner its just gorgeous.

Something I'm seriously lacking in are blushes, well...different shades of blush. Most of what I have are pretty pink ones so when we get to this time of year I tend to reach for one I got in a Glossy box a couple of years ago now. It's not as pinky, with slightly deeper purple undertones and makes a nice change from the other I usually wear. If you have any recommendations of great blush shades please let me know so I can grow my teenie tiny collection. And just because skin can start to feel a little dull around this time of year I like to keep L'oreal's Lumi Magique in my make up bag for a little highlight if needed.

Do you change up your autumn make up? Any recommendations? :)

Made Me Happy This Week

made me happy this week

It's October!! How on earth has that happened? The mind boggles, but it's left me feeling ridiculously happy this week. There's so much to be looking forward to, for some reason this time of year always seems to be much busier than the rest, we have many more plans and I'm just so excited by all of it. Honestly, the last three months of the year are definitely my favourite! Also, while it's still quite warm during the day, later in the evening it's definitely getting cold, meaning I can once again wear my favourite sweater (pictured above)! It was a complete bargain in a River Island sale two or three years ago now so the minute I found it, I snapped it up.

1. So many deliveries! I love having things delivered to the house and we've had about 6 things week. I get so excited opening them, even though I know exactly what the contents will be as I ordered and paid for it. Honestly you'd' think they were gifts or something.

2. A tiny little Yankee Candle I was given by Paul's mum as a thank you for making a cake. I love the tiny Yankee Candles -they're so cute and because it's in a summery orange scent its just enough to see us through the rest of this Indian summer we seem to still be having.

3. Walks in the park surrounded by the most beautiful autumnal trees. I was absolutely devastated that I forgot to bring my camera with me (bad blogger!) as I could have got some beautiful shots, but I'm sure we'll be back soon.

4. Looking at bathroom tiles. It's funny what seemingly mundane tasks become really quite fun when you have your own house to decorate.

5. The super moon, did you see it? I set an alarm for 3am to wake up and see what was going on and from where we are it looked quite small, but still fun to see anyway.

6. Huge ASOS orders of things you're absolutely sure will look awful on you that actually turn out to be really rather lovely. I even ordered a pair of pewter brogues that are quite different from me but I think I might keep so I'm sure they'll make an appearance here soon if I do.

7. The house being all clean and tidy. I try to keep things tidy most of the time but I can't lie, things can sometimes get away from me. But those days where the whole house has been cleaned and there are no dirty clothes in the laundry basket, and clean bedding has been put on just really please me.

8. My long time love affair with white chocolate Kinder Bueno's has been rekindled this week, they are a lovely little treat with a cup of tea.
