Made Me Happy This Week

made-me-happy
{One of the prettiest houses in NYC}

While I have to admit that I may be the teeniest bit sad to be home from New York, it has been such a happy week. Of course, at the beginning we were still in the city I've fallen head over heels in love with. Then C picked us up from the airport when we arrived back in Edinburgh, and the genuine excitement on her face when she seen us, made me so happy to be home. It's lovely to go away, but home will always be the best place in the world. The last couple of days have been spent talking about our trip and taking the odd nap to recover from the jet lag -which I have to say, I think I'll miss.

1. Watching the sunrise and turn the sky the most beautiful redish orange, even more amazing when seen from the plane.

2. C, picking up milk for us coming home. Meaning that we didn't have to go out for any in our sleep deprived state, and could have a cup of tea the minute we got in the door.

3. Nutella porridge for breakfast, with a pile of fresh raspberries. Two days in a row now and I think tomorrow may be a third.

4. Sleeping in our own bed again. As much as I liked the bed in the hotel, you can't beat your own.

5. Catching up on shows we missed while we were away.

6. Being too exhausted to cook so opting for chinese take-out instead.

7. Cold brew coffee! I can already tell it' going to take over our summer where drinks are concerned.

8. Snow! Ok, so it's very nearly May, and I'm pretty sure it shouldn't be snowing, but it is -and that's a little strange. However, I'll never get tired of watching snow fall and listening to how silent things are when it does.

New York: My Travel Outfit

my-travel-outfit

As we're away at the moment -probably jet lagged and eating far too much in New York, I thought instead of the usual "Made Me Happy" post, I'd share my travel outfit with you. Especially seeing as I'm quite pleased with it.

I haven't flow anywhere in quite some time -a few years actually, so I've been looking forward to each and every part of this trip for a while now. As excited as I am (even about the airport and plane journey) I haven't forgotten how important it is to be comfortable, for long flights especially.

When thinking about what I wanted to wear I knew first of all, it was going to be leggings! They're basically as comfortable as wearing pyjamas, while still managing to look stylish. Because our weather is so temperamental, I try to dress in layers most days, so I've applied the same thinking to this outfit. This shirt is fast becoming one of my favourite things to wear, it's so soft and was such a good price. Under that I wore a black t-shirt and for coat I had on my leather jacket. Because you can sometimes get cold on planes, I also wore my enormous blanket scarf from Asos -it's honestly huge! It was quite nice to have something to wrap up in on the plane. On my feet, to finish the outfit off I wore my new Adidas Superstars. I never thought they'd be a pair of shoes I'd own but I'm very glad I do...my feet have never been so comfortable.

I hope you all have a great weekend.

My Travel Essentials

My-Travel-Essentials

When it comes to packing, even for trips close to home, I like to take a minimal amount of stuff with me. I hate the feeling of carrying around unnecessary weight, and over stuffed bags, but at the same time I like to make sure I have enough with me so I'm comfortable. In about an hours time, Paul and I will be on a plane headed for New York so I thought I'd share with you what I'll be taking in my handbag and how I keep it all organised, nobody wants to be rummaging around for bits and pieces while trying to get through the airport after all.

My-Travel-Essentials

I'm totally and completely reliant on my iPhone, I know that's not a good thing but I am, and I've made peace with the fact that it will forever more be attached to my hand. As well as my phone, I like to keep a battery pack with me, especially for longer journeys in case the battery gets too low. We've had a few over the years but my new one, that Paul very kindly got me for Christmas is by far my favourite as it can charge an iPhone twice. I think he found it here if you're interested. My phone is usually in my hand or pocket so in my bag, in a clear flat sunglasses case I got from Topshop I keep my charger and the cables I need to keep with it.

My-Travel-Essentials

I can't go anywhere without a notebook and pen. As much as I love my laptop and phone, when it comes to taking notes or making lists I'm a pen and paper girl. I picked this little blue one up recently from Homesence and it's the perfect size to pop in your handbag. Along with my glasses so my eyes don't get tired on the flight.

My-Travel-Essentials

I like to keep a little selection of things in a small make up bag that I like to call "just in case" items. It's never usually a lot, just a couple of things I think I might need, and on this flight I'm taking -fluffy socks because I always take my shoes off and sometimes my feet get cold. Paracetamol and Ibuprofen for obvious reasons. Compeed Blister Patches because they are a life saver, even though I'm hoping we won't need them seeing as we'll be in trainers all week. My Tangle Teezer, hair bobbles and cirby grips to get my hair up if I want to, and usually mints or chewing gum but I forgot to include that in this picture.

My-Travel-Essentials

Last up is liquid products. The make up and skincare items I carry change all the time so I haven't included them here, but these are the three items that are must haves for me on flights. My eyes can get quite dry and even more so on planes so I find the Optrex ActiMist to be a great help with this. If I'm being honest I think the drops are more effective, but don't like the idea of using them on a plane. Hand sanitiser is always in my bag, no matter where I'm going -but I'm especially thankful for it when travelling in train stations or airports. Last is my Eight Hour Cream. this product has a cult following and it's easy to see why when it can be used for so many things, my favourite things to use it for is lip balm...it does wonders for dry lips.

So that's what I'll be taking with me, apart from our wallet of travel documents, some dark chocolate to snack on, and of course...my camera.

I have a couple of posts scheduled to go up while we're away and in the meantime I'm sure I'll be around on Twitter and Instagram, so if you'd like to see what we're up to you can follow me there. Also if you have any recommendations of places we should visit please let me know, I'd love to hear them.

Made Me Happy This Week

made-me-happy

If you were to ask me how I feel at the moment I don't think I could find the words to explain to you. I have constant butterflies, I keep laughing and smiling for no apparent reason and "excited" doesn't come close to describing it. This is all because in a matter of days, not weeks...but days, Paul and I will be in New York! When we booked it all those months ago it felt as if it would never come around, but it has, and we're going, and if I don't calm down I won't sleep for the next few nights. Hopefully the weekend will be quite relaxed and we can take our time doing some tidying and packing.

1. Making a huge cake with my niece on Wednesday. She really is such a good little baker, I hardly have to help at all anymore. She's also decided she'd like to enter the Junior Bake-Off when she's old enough and not that I'm bias, but I think we have a little winner.

2. Spending Monday shopping with Paul for last minute holiday things, and stopping for tasty treats on the way home.

3. I'm pretty sure our little fluff ball knows we're leaving soon so she's been cuddling up to us at every available opportunity, which is really rather sweet.

4. My mum buying us some bars of that dark chocolate I mentioned last week, she thought we'd like some for the plane. She's so sweet

5. Having dinner mid-week with our best friends, we always have such a good time. The actual dinner it's self was the most random mix of food you'll ever see together on one table, but it all odly worked and was very tasty!

6. Picking up our dollars and travel card.

7. Waking up early every day this week at least an hour before my alarm, I love seeing more of the morning -it's such a peaceful quiet time.

8. The sweetest card from our friends saying how excited they are for us and our trip, with a drawing of the Statue of Liberty included of course. They really are the best.

A Spring Wardrobe Update

spring-wardrobe-update

It's been a while since I last gave my wardrobe an update of any real significance. I've bought the odd thing here or there, but after clearing out and getting rid of a large portion of what I owned, I'm very careful not to buy unnecessary things. Instead, when I now buy clothes, I look for items that I can wear at least three different ways so I know they won't be left hanging there, collecting dust and taking up space. I also take time to think about purchases, instead of impulse buying and after one wear regretting the over sized, far too short, odd black top that I'll never ever wear again. The mind when in shopping mode is a dangerous thing!

Seeing as we have a trip coming up, and seeing as I was seriously lacking in transitional spring clothing (even though, it's basically still winter out there right now) we did a little shopping recently and I'm very pleased with my finds. To be honest, when I look at my pile of items they don't exactly scream spring, but then I've never really been one for pale pinks and soft pastel shade in clothing, not really. My spring wear always leans more towards different shades of blue.

spring-wardrobe-update

I like to pick up new basics every so often so they don't start to look too worn in, so I ordered two new Forever T-shirts from Asos in a recent order, one white and one grey. I'll always be a jeans and t-shirt kind of girls so I love it when I find ones I like, and these I love! In the same order I also found a blue check shirt, which was actually from New Look. The quality is lovely and the material is so soft, I've been wearing it layered over one of the forever tee's and when it hasn't been bitterly cold, with my leather jacket too. I realised a few weeks back that I own no striped tops...I of course had to fix this so found a lovely one in H&M. Not only is it a great fit and a good length on me, it's from their conscious clothing line. A few weeks ago now I got the first pair of proper trainers that I'd had in...I've really no idea how long. Since then I've become more and more fond of the trainer trend so picked up another pair, this time the Adidas Superstars. They look great with most of what I've been wearing and are so comfortable I think I'll soon struggle to want to wear anything else. Lastly I've added two new bit's of denim, one light one dark. The light skinny jeans were actually a gift from my mum and they are such a perfect fit, and from a shop I'd never have even thought to look at online - Very. The others are jeggings from River Island, but they feel much thicker than some I've had before so could pass for jeans.

My new wardrobe has been accompanied by my favourite spring scent from Jo Malone, Peony and Blush Suede, and I've added a little more glow to my make up. I'm now on the hunt for a new highlighter and blush to give my make up bag a little update too, any suggestions?

Have you added any new spring updates to your wardrobe?

Made Me Happy This Week

made-me-happy

This month is turning into, and will forever be know as, "the month of the list". I've lost count of the amount I've written in the past eight days - and that's even for me, a perpetual list writer. They make me feel much more organised, and watching tasks get ticked off pleases me greatly. The reason for so many is that we're going away soon (have I mentioned that, maybe only a few hundred times -I'm very excited!!) and there are a few things still to get, a few things to get organised, things in the house we have to do, and when you add that to the lists for packing and places to visit while we're away...well, you get the general idea.

1. A well over due catch up with C. Sometimes life gets busy and we don't get the chance to see each other as much as we'd like, but after what turned out to be a good 3 or 4 weeks, it was fun to spend a few hours chatting.

2. New trainers! I've well and truly jumped on the trainer trend, I've never been a big one for trainers but I'm a total convert. My feet are definitely thanking me.

3. Cereal for dinner is sometimes a must!

4. The day we leave for New York is also my mums birthday. I've been noting down some ideas of little surprises, even if we won't be here to see her. Nothing huge, but just a few little things I hope make her day that little bit more special.

5. Dark chocolate with raspberry. It's my new not so guilty treat after trying some at my mums.

6. Liz Earle's Eyebright has been a saviour of mine this week. My eyes have felt a little sore in the morning and this product is wonderful for cooling them down and getting them back to normal.

7. Making a little H&M order for some striped tops, you can never have too many.

8. Our apple trees are finally starting to blossom. I feel like they're a little late to the party this spring, but I'm glad it's happening.

Tips for a Good Night's Sleep

tips-for-a-good-nights-sleep

We seem to live in a world now where no one sleeps, we're all so busy with work and social commitments that our minds never seem to stop. Not to mention all the technology keeping our already busy minds even more active.

I'm a very light sleeper, nearly anything will wake me up, and even nights when I go to bed feeling completely exhausted, it can take me a long time to finally fall asleep. Also, I'm sure he won't mind me saying (we're all friends here after all), but Paul snores. He could fall asleep on a washing line, so most nights it only takes his head to hit the pillow and that's him gone. If he starts to snore before I manage to drift off then that's me awake for at least another hour.

I thought I'd share some of the tips I've picked up recently, plus a couple that I've used for a while myself, in case -like me, you sometimes struggle to get a good nights sleep.

-good bedding-
Bad pillows or the wrong kind of duvet can ruin your good nights sleep -not to mention the neck cramps you could wake up with. You spend a large part of your life in bed so, make sure the bedding you buy is good quality and that it's made up of things you find the most comfortable.

-keep a notebook beside the bed-
This is something I've done for quite a long time now. I have a very active mind -overactive some might say, and I will regularly wake up at silly times of the night with something I've suddenly remembered I have to do, and idea for a blog post that I must write down or any other nonsense that seems important in the early hours. Having a notebook there means that I can wake up, make a scribbled note and go back to sleep knowing I won't forget it. Also knowing it's there in case I need it can sometimes help, even if I don't write anything down.

-watching tv-
I know some people who find it helpful to drift off to sleep with the tv on, even some people who need to have it on, and couldn't possibly sleep without it. Some night's we will watch television right before bed, or even in bed -but I have to be careful with what I watch. It has to be fun, lighthearted, nothing to heavy or serious. I have very vivid dreams and I find that anything with a big serious story line or something incredibly emotional, can sometimes spill over into my dreams and again -cause me to wake up.

-sleep sprays-
If you'd asked me about these a couple of years ago I'd have passed them off as a waste of money and not given them a second thought. But after finding one in my beauty advent calendar two years ago I've become a huge fan. The scents are very relaxing and help you to unwind as you try to drift off, my favourite is the This Works Pillow Spray.

-avoid clocks-
If I still have a bad night when I do wake up I don't under any circumstances look at the time. It's such a small thing but I find looking at the time then causes me to lie there and stress about the fact that I'm still awake, and need to be up in X amount of hours. If you don't know what time it is, then you cant worry about it and put yourself under any extra stress or pressure trying to get back to sleep.

Made Me Happy This Week

made-me-happy

I'm going to start this by asking "How on earth is it April already!?" I've been asking myself this question all day and to be honest I'm not exactly sure where the times gone, I'm positive it was January just a moment ago. What that means however, is that we go to New York this month! When we booked it, it felt as if it would never come and now it's just over two weeks away, the butterflies are building -happy butterflies of course.

1. The Pixar short called Lava. If you haven't seen it, you should watch it -it'll leave you with the biggest smile. (watch here)

2. A new collection of Yankee Candles has just come into stores and I'm in love with the White tea scent, we picked one up today so the house will soon be smelling beautiful.

3. Finding a new spot for coffee that I'm pretty sure is going to become one of our favourite lunch spots. The scones are the best I've ever tried! (pictured above)

4. My mum, and even more so my gran, just can't resist a bargain. This is why a cupboard in our kitchen is now full to bursting with Easter chocolate that they found in the sale on Easter Monday. We definitely won't have to buy any treats for a while, that's for sure!

5. Daffodils in the garden, brightening up even the most miserable of rainy mornings.

6. Trying out a new nail conditioner that I think is actually doing something. I've only been using it for a few days so I'll keep you posted.

7. Gingerbread chai tea from Bluebird Tea co. I'd completely forgot about the little bit left over from Christmas so it was a nice little treat to find that on a cold afternoon this week.

8. There is a bird that sits outside of our house each morning and I swear to you it sounds exactly like a car alarm! It's amazing how well they can mimic sounds.
