My Birthday

Instead of the usual list of happy things that finds it way here on a Friday, I wanted to do something a little different. It's just for today and really it's because over the past week, I've had too many happy things to condense into a short list, and that's such a lovely feeling to have. So get your self a cup of tea, because it's probably going to be a long one.

Last Sunday, June 25th, was my birthday. I think I mentioned last week that I wasn't sure exactly what was happening on the day or around it, but it ended up being what I can honestly say, was one of the best days I've ever had. The whole day, from start to finish was perfect -a strong word, I know, but it really was.

I woke up, bright and early to the smell of waffles and hot coffee, and to Paul singing happy birthday. He had made us breakfast in bed, and not just cereal or toast. He'd made funfetti waffles, with cream cheese frosting, fresh raspberries and the best maple syrup. Oh...and extra sprinkles on top. I think the fact the we had it in bed made it even better. As soon as I'd finished Paul passed me this large bag full of things to open. They were the most thoughtful gifts I've ever been given, he had taken so much time, put in so much thought and effort, and within 5 minutes I was in tears. My favourite one by far was in a little wooden box. In the box, written out on the brown paper luggage tags where reasons he loves me, after reading three of them I was crying! He'd also bought me a Canon A-1 camera, and some film to play with. We took some pictures on the day, but I'm not sure exactly how they'll turn out seeing as I'd never used it before. Along with more Polaroid film, a huge pack of Sharpies, and some other little things, I was definitely spoiled.

After breakfast we got up to get ready, and when I went downstairs I found the most amazing decorations. There was a tassel garland in gold and pastel shades, pretty fan type things hanging from the lights, our gold happy birthday balloons, and confetti balloons all over the living room. Also, a whole load of confetti everywhere, from one of the balloons bursting! I love decorations, any excuse to decorate the house and I will, so it makes me sad that it's all been tidied away now.

As the day went on, Paul couldn't really hide what was going on anymore. The main giveaway, and really the most obvious clue, were the two bags of charcoal for the BBQ that were sitting at the back door. He came clean, told me everything and I was 1, SO excited for everyone to come up, and 2, very impressed with everyone's secret keeping...sneaky people.

By 2pm, everyone had started to arrive and to make sure she didn't miss out with being on holiday at the time, Paul had printed out a picture of my mum and put her on a stick.

I was completely spoiled by everyone there. I was given so many wonderful, amazing gifts, so many thoughtful heartwarming cards, and the effort that each one of them went to for me, for the day, just went to prove what beautiful people we have in our life. The best friends, most wonderful just made me feel so happy, and still does. Oh and the effect I mentioned, that also came in the form of food! Honestly, you have never seen so much food for one BBQ, everyone went overboard, and I'm still not 100% on who made or brought what. But seriously, it was a feast...a very tasty (wish we had it more often) feast.

The evening ended just as perfectly as the day had been. After everyone had gone, all the food had been put away -we had lots of left overs, always a bonus. Rubbish was put out, and the house was somehow actual miracle if you ask me. Paul and I got into pyjamas and cuddles up on the sofa with a mug of tea. Paul had been on his feet all day, cooking, tidying, making sure everything was perfect, so he was in need of a sit down. We were even too full for cake! But don't worry, we had ours the next day.

The whole few days this week have been wonderful, not just my actual birthday. Paul and I had a day out in Edinburgh on Monday, we did a little shopping, tried some of the best pizza I've ever had and had BBQ left overs for dinner. It's also been one of those times when you're enjoying yourself so much that you forget to pick up your camera. While I do wish I'd taken a couple of specific pictures, of the cake, the balloons, everyone else was snapping away so we have a lot of candid shots to look back at. As well as a pile of Polaroids, they're definitely my favourites.

Well done if you've made it to the end, and thank you so much if you're one of the sweet people who send me a birthday message, you helped make the day extra special.

Made Me Happy This Week

This weekend is a very exciting's my birthday!! This year is a little different to normal, as I have very little idea of whats happening on the actual day. Normally I'll be involved in the plans in someway, either helping to decide what we do or where we go, but this year, nothing! But I do think Paul will tell me some of whats happening before Sunday because I'm not a fan of big leaves me feeling quite anxious which doesn't then make things that much fun. But he knows this better than anyone, so I'm not worried. I do know however, that my brother and his girlfriend are coming up tomorrow night to make us dinner, a roast I think, so I'm looking forward to that. And...I need to start my cake! Hope you all have a great weekend!

1. Finally...finally, getting the pair of Vans I've been looking for. They came back in stock on Asos and I snapped them up the minute I seen them.

2. Oreo snack packs. Just two per pack so you don't end up eating going overboard.

3. On Tuesday this week, it had been three years since we moved into this house. We celebrated with Nando's, just like we did the night we moved in, and because of a mistake they made with the order, we ended up with double everything! It was like an anniversary present from Nando's! It also meant we had a very tasty lunch the next day.

4. The rain in the evenings this week has been a nice break from the horrible muggy nights when sleeping seems impossible.

5. Our pretty wild flowers. The bed is full of them now, and there are still more to pop up.

6. The section in our freezer that is now dedicated to ice-cram. Completely unnecessary, but completely wonderful in the hot weather.

7. I'm not sure if it's the weather, the amount of water I'm drinking or something else, but my skin is looking good at the moment and I'm really enjoying it.

8. Gossip Girl, have I mentioned that I've started watching it? I know, I'm a little late to the game, but I've already watched the first series and I'm hooked! And somehow, I've managed to go all this time and not have the ending spoiled for me.

Lunch at Maxi's

Don't you just love it when you stubble across a place that you instantly fall in love with?

That happened to us last week. We were in the Stockbridge area of Edinburgh, looking for somewhere to stop for lunch, and really quite hungry by this point! We walked past this very unassuming place, we couldn't see inside because the sun on the windows was so bright, and the place it's self didn't look like much from the outside. But, we were hungry, and the menu drew us in.

As we walked in, I immediately loved the place. The decor was so many things I enjoy -exposed brick, white tiles, distressed wood with quirky art work on the wall. The tables were covered in beautiful flowers and the food is served on enamel plates -I do love enamel. It's one of those places you walk into and want to start taking photos. Which I did a little of, but it was getting quite busy and I started to feel a little self conscious snapping away, instead of eating my food. I need to get better at not bothering about that.

Although we were hungry, we didn't want to fill up too much. Before stopping for lunch we'd spotted a little cafe full of beautiful cakes, so we knew we'd be calling in there after for a coffee and some sweet treats. It really was amazing, but I'll tell you more about that another time.

We decided to share a grilled cheese sandwich with chutney, and a plate of hummus and oatcakes, all made fresh by the lovely girls working there. The grilled cheese sandwich didn't disappoint, it was packed full of strong, gooey cheddar, and I think had Parmesan grated on top. The hummus was a very generous portion, full of whole chickpeas for texture and topped with paprika. Paul is quite fussy about his hummus, and this was one of his favourites.

If we hadn't spotted the cakes before heading to Maxi's, we definitely would have stayed and had something sweet there too! They looked wonderful, and I couldn't help staring at the lady sat next to us, with her cup of coffee and amazing slice of what I think was lemon drizzle.

I'm already looking forward to our next visit, hopefully it won't be too long until we're back...maybe even this week, over or around my birthday weekend!!

Made Me Happy This Week

As I'm writing this post it's Thursday evening, it's scheduled to go up on Friday afternoon, which means, we will all now know the outcome of the election. I hope everyone who could vote, did. Election talk is currently all over the TV so I'm listening to everyone try to predict whats going to happen. Tomorrow (or today for you -time travel!) Paul and I are going in to Edinburgh for the day, and I'm really looking forward to it. We've found a new burger place we want to try for dinner, and I'd really like to find a new cafe for some afternoon cake and coffee. What are your plans for this weekend?

1. Sookie's hair when it's time for her to go to the groomers. She ends up with 90's style curtains and she looks adorable.

2. Our wild flowers are finally coming through. You can now see them popping up in all their pretty colours, brightening up the garden as they do so.

3. The Spotify app on our new television. It's my new favourite thing.

4. Daredevil on's amazing! We are well and truly hooked.

5. Sookie snoring, possibly the sweetest thing you ever will see.

6. Walks by the water with my favourite person.

7. How much we're looking forward to a lazy Sunday morning, with the possibility of pancakes!

8. Shredded delivery notes. Sookie has a hate for anything that comes through our letterbox...she will do her best to rip letters open if you don't catch them first. I shouldn't laugh, but it's just so funny.

Made Me Happy This Week

Today, I was supposed to be out for the day with my grandma, for a little shopping, a little lunch and a wander around town. But these plans have changed and instead, I've spent today getting ahead with work, doing some house work -which to be honest needed done so it's maybe a blessing in disguise, and nipping out to run a few errands. So all in all it's been a productive day and it means I can go into the weekend with nothing but free time. Paul's mum and dad are back from their holiday, so tomorrow night we'll be seeing them for a little catch up. And Sunday, we have all to ourselves, the whole lazy day to do whatever we want! And seeing as we're picking up our new TV tonight, I think that will end up being binge watching Marvel shows on Netflix.

1. Bank holiday Mondays and the extra day of weekend they bring with them.

2. A VR games night with my brother and his girlfriend. We had fajitas, ALL the snacks, and Paul even got to be a ghost buster.

3. Rediscovering the Elvive clay range, it's fantastic for getting as many days as possible between washes and stopping your hair looking greasy.

4. I've discovered the Instagram filters this week and we've been spending far too much time playing with them.

5. Rainbow pyjamas.

6. We've been buying Snack a Jacks again, and i forgot how much I like the sweet chilli flavour. Those and the salt and vinegar are my favourite.

7. The new Pirates of the Caribbean film...its SO good! I'm so happy there's a new one out, I've missed them.

8. Finally getting a pair of white Converse. I'm not sure why it's take me so long but I now have a pair, just in time for summer.

Hello June

Today is the 1st of June! Can you believe it?

It truly does feel that with each passing year, time goes by faster and faster. The fact that we've just stepped into the sixth month seems almost impossible, even thought I've been aware of the date, it's still kind of crept up quicker than I'd have liked it to. It honestly scares me a little when I think about it.

And hear was me feeling sad that we'd postponed our wedding until net will be here before we realise!

As much as it's freaking me out to think about, I do actually love June for a few different reasons. Firstly, it's my birthday month!! We love birthdays, we always try to make the most of them and really make a big deal. Paul's, as bad as me with decorations and the little bits that make it special. And this year, excitingly, we're going down to London for it. Neither Paul or I have ever been so as you can imagine, we cant wait!

It's also the month that really starts to feel like summer. It does technically start towards the end of June, but the whole month, there's just a difference in the air and you can feel the transition from spring time.

On the 20th of this month we will have been in this house for 3 years. THREE YEARS!! Where has the time gone. But it's been three wonderful happy years and I couldn't have asked for better. I think on the days we'll be doing what we did the night we moved in. Watching TV and ordering Nando's. And toasting to many more to come.

And I will apologise to all of you that are no where near ready to hear this word, but...Christmas. We are basically half way there. Paul and my mum always joke about how my birthday is the half way point in the year, and on Christmas day it's my half birthday.

So June should be a pretty exciting month, and I'm looking forward to what ever else brings.
