Lunch at Maxi's

Don't you just love it when you stubble across a place that you instantly fall in love with?

That happened to us last week. We were in the Stockbridge area of Edinburgh, looking for somewhere to stop for lunch, and really quite hungry by this point! We walked past this very unassuming place, we couldn't see inside because the sun on the windows was so bright, and the place it's self didn't look like much from the outside. But, we were hungry, and the menu drew us in.

As we walked in, I immediately loved the place. The decor was so many things I enjoy -exposed brick, white tiles, distressed wood with quirky art work on the wall. The tables were covered in beautiful flowers and the food is served on enamel plates -I do love enamel. It's one of those places you walk into and want to start taking photos. Which I did a little of, but it was getting quite busy and I started to feel a little self conscious snapping away, instead of eating my food. I need to get better at not bothering about that.

Although we were hungry, we didn't want to fill up too much. Before stopping for lunch we'd spotted a little cafe full of beautiful cakes, so we knew we'd be calling in there after for a coffee and some sweet treats. It really was amazing, but I'll tell you more about that another time.

We decided to share a grilled cheese sandwich with chutney, and a plate of hummus and oatcakes, all made fresh by the lovely girls working there. The grilled cheese sandwich didn't disappoint, it was packed full of strong, gooey cheddar, and I think had Parmesan grated on top. The hummus was a very generous portion, full of whole chickpeas for texture and topped with paprika. Paul is quite fussy about his hummus, and this was one of his favourites.

If we hadn't spotted the cakes before heading to Maxi's, we definitely would have stayed and had something sweet there too! They looked wonderful, and I couldn't help staring at the lady sat next to us, with her cup of coffee and amazing slice of what I think was lemon drizzle.

I'm already looking forward to our next visit, hopefully it won't be too long until we're back...maybe even this week, over or around my birthday weekend!!
