Back to Film

While I do remember using my mums old cameras when I was really young, using an actual roll of film and having to load it into the camera, every one I've ever owned myself has been digital. And don't get me wrong -I love digital!, but there is something wonderful about film that's been forgotten as cameras and technology have progressed. You couldn't be as snap happy as you can be with almost unlimited storage on an SD card, you had to try and take the shot you wanted, first time hopefully. And we never have the excitement of waiting to see how they'll turn out when we pick them up from the shop. Something that was a concern of mine, I didn't think there were many places left that actually developed film. Thankfully there are, and one quite close to where we live.

For my birthday this year, Paul found me an old camera I'd had my eye on for a while. It's a Canon A-1 and it's in such beautiful condition you'd never believe it's as old as it is. I'd been playing with some old ones my grans had for a long time, but they weren't in the best condition so I did a little research. I wanted one that could not only be a good starter camera for my foray into film, but that could also take amazing photos after some practice. The Canon A-1 kept coming back as the best option and now I've had it for a while I can say it definitely was.

The first couple of times we used it (one being my birthday party), we didn't change any settings, we just used it as it came. The photo's to be honest were awful! Some turned out ok, but most were blurry and just a bit rubbish. After playing around with things a little more, and reading more on how to use it properly, we took it with us to Edinburgh for the day. I am so pleased with how the roll turned out, these are some of my favourites from the day. And even before we flipped through them, we got to have the excitement of picking them up -one of the best bits! I can't wait to build up our collection of photo's taken on film, they have a certain look to them that I've fallen in love with.

Learning to use this camera is obviously an on going process, and one day hopefully I'll be able to go from day to night, different settings and film, without having to refer back to Google for help! But so far, I'm really enjoying it, and it's only growing my love for photography. I also think it would be quite nice to document them here as I go along, take pictures of the old with the new.

  1. Your shots turned out beautifully! You should check and see if there's an artist workspace near you that offers a darkroom you could rent time in.

  2. I love a good old camera and I love going through old photos that you can actually touch instead of just pushing on a button and scrolling through a digital camera. It's a completely different experience.

    Enjoy your camera!
